Heads Up Regional Think Tank

The ‘Heads Up!’ Regional Think Tank, which occurred on June 19–20, 2025, was a two-day hybrid event bringing together policymakers, advocates, researchers, and community leaders from over ten countries across Latin America and the Caribbean to address one of the most urgent challenges on our roads: helmet safety.

Motorcycle fatalities remain the highest road user death accounting for just over 30% of fatalities in Jamaica for the year 2024 (Island Traffic Authority Fatalities Report, 2024), and 25% of traffic deaths in the Americas (UN Global Road Safety Report, 2023).

The National Helmet Wearing Coalition (NHWC) will host this landmark event as part of a growing movement to improve helmet use, reduce fatalities, and shift the culture around motorcycle safety across the region.

While enforcement is a crucial component of behaviour change, lasting progress also depends on shared knowledge, coordinated strategies, and a unified voice.
